“If I stole your iPod and hit play…”

9 Sep

“…what would be the first three songs I heard?”

This is one of my interview questions that I will ask you if you come to campus for a conversation. I’m just throwing that out there :)  But in light of my other posts, I realized today I hadn’t really answered that question for myself, so here is my best attempt at that.

  1. Everything,” Michael Buble
  2. Signal Fire,” Snow Patrol
  3. In my Life,” Beatles

I’m obsessed with MB–I saw him for the first time in Roanoke, and I truly believe his concert changed my life.  Didn’t hurt that I had second row seats with my good friend and colleague SD.  She and I have made an informal/nonverbal pact that if he’s within an hour from us, we’re going to find a way to  go see him, and we’re going to get as close to the front as possible.  I know that she feels the same way about this because when we heard he was releasing his new album there was a chorus of instantaneous  ”BUBLE!!” on the first floor of our office.

Music is a big deal in my house, and when JGL proposed he sent me to work with the lyrics to “Signal Fire” in my Valentines Day card.  Later that evening he made a beautiful mixed CD, with this song on it, and took me dancing in our living room.  He actually proposed during a Nick Drake song, but this is the one that stands out in my mind when I think about that day.

My father loves the Beatles.  One of the first albums I can recall is Seargeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, and I would play it over and over again on Dad’s record player (once I passed his “your old enough not to mess my records up test.”).  One Christmas he gave me their album, Rubber Soul, and I instantly fell in love with the very trite but fabulous “In My Life.”  When I’m having a bad day, I whip that one out.

What does all this have to do with how or why you’ll get into SB?  Honestly?  It doesn’t–I just think it’s a fun question, and one that makes you think.  Plus it bodes well for wonderful talking points later on down the road.  Music, regardless of what you like, who you like, and if you can create it, really spans generations and helps keep us connected.

As Alex G. would say, “GAL, you’re getting old!”.  I know, I know, I am–but I can still relate when it comes to what you’re listening to ;)

Take Five for Family

8 Sep

Family and Work often times blur together for me.  Work often extends into my time at home, and just as often my family comes to work (so to speak).

In interviews we will often talk to you about what your biggest aspirations and dreams are, what you are looking for in a college, and what makes you tick.  Kind of unfair that you can’t ask questions back, right?  Yea, pretty much–which is why I want to give you an open invitation to ask not only questions about the college, but questions for me and our staff, if you have them.

But like I said, the lines between family and work blur for me, so I would love to take the chance to introduce you to my family…or at least the furry ones :)  Carson and Lucy are our Dog Children, and are a handful!  Carson is camera-shy, and only really makes an appearance in video, but Lucy loves the camera, as evident here.   She’s a ham!  Both Carson and Lucy will make visits to campus to go for walks around our Dairy Loop, and also serve as pet therapy for students who are homesick or stressed out about homework and exams.  How can you be stressed when looking at that sweet face?  :)

The Fam

In the Hot Seat

I would love to go back and read the interview write up my counselor wrote about me here at SB.  Back in the day I was incredibly shy and very soft spoken.  It’s sometime incredibly difficult to remember what it was like to be that girl…but that’s a whole other blog topic :)

Yesterday I had the good fortune to interview Laura R–we had a great chat, and I was (and still am!) thrilled that she’s so interested in SB.  And Laura–I came home and told my hubby all about Rent (all over again) and why we MUST see it soon (in addition to what a fab chat we had (:).

I think interviewing/meeting students might be my favorite part of my job.  Whether it’s in a formal interview, or just a meeting for coffee, I love sitting in someone else’s space for 30 minutes and learning about what makes her tick and what she’s passionate about.  That’s my job, in a nutshell, to help young ladies figure out how their dreams and hopes for their lives can fit here at SB.  Awesome, isn’t it?

So if you have a letter from me sitting on your coffee table at home saying, Come meet with me!  please take the time to do so if you’re available–it makes travel season much more fun for me, and it’s a great opportunity to learn more about SB.  Hopefully I’ll be seeing you soon!
